Didn't attend the meeting today, didn't feel like it. Tired, still recovering from the flight. Never mind the irritating library worker, and the irritating club member. All a collection of bad things. Too bad - I'd bought the book, just $1.50 though, yay, and it's a classic. Looking forward to next week's meeting with the other club, they're all nice.

Durham-Raleigh
Came to scout the place out for possible relocation, as Hubby got offer here. Guess there'd be a radical slowing of pace from here. Not much going on, an alarming number of churches. Almost everything was closed that Sunday. Not cool. Will take some getting used to.
The area's been described as one of the more liberal areas there. Doesn't make me feel better, sometimes uncomfortable even in the 'developed' areas.
OTOH, we'd have a heck of a house for a heck of a lot less money, and since there's nothing to do, we could spend a lot of time remodeling it.
Can't think of any other pluses at the moment.

Book - The Anodyne Necklace
Library had it, so borrowed it. Ok book, really fluffy, no surprises, not especially well-written. But I like the British setting, I like the Richard Jury character, and it's not incompetent, so I'll probably read a few more before I can't stand it anymore. What's seriously irritating is the number of typos in her books, even through The Old Wine Shades. Isn't anyone proofreading these things?

Down to LA again
Sister still in hospital. Flew down 20th, flew back on 22nd. Much less stressful this time, I wasn't already so exhausted from the drive that I couldn't help out.

Down to LA
What a week of hell, not least for me but especially for my poor sister. Drove down 13th, back on 16th, which I don't feel like doing again for a long time. Will fly instead.

Book - Fresh Disasters
Never read anything by Stuart Woods before, but this was on sale for 50 cents at the library, so why not? This was a hilarious guy romp, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Very fast and fun read, full of silly snappy dialogue, and mob stuff. Gets really dark with the psychopath, but still doesn't get bogged down. It's not great literature, but it's really satisfying book junk food.

TV - Monk Marathon
Finished watching the last of my taped Monk New Year's Marathon. In the mood for them at the moment, very funny. I go through periods where they irritate the crap out of me or, like now, I really like them. All of these were from 2002-2003, featuring Sharona, who I liked. I remember being very surprised when she left the show, I wasn't sure the series could survive. But now that I'm watching these old episodes again, I actually think Natalie is just as good, if not better, than Sharona. But then again, I'm not very attached to anything in this TV series.
I liked the episode with Andrew McCarthy (sp?) as the school scientist giving Monk a run for the money. Grew up very handsome, just like Patrick Dempsey. Yummy.

Book - Stupeur et Tremblements
Very cool, just got my copy in the mail. Wanted to read something light, nothing taxing on my French abilities (or lack thereof). Have an English translation too to help matters along.

First Major Storm This Season
Really strong gusty winds buffeting all the trees, shaking off a thick coating of oak leaves everywhere, which were then glued down by the driving rain. Started yesterday afternoon, all day today, seems to have let up a little at the moment.

New Year's
Great relaxing New Year's Eve with Hubby and kitties. Touristing around SF again, Columbus and Union Square, then home. Tried to get a couple bottles from the Whisky Shop, but closed. Got a couple vertical calendars at half price, yay. Only need one more, the Japanese Gardens, beautiful photography and quality print. Hard to find at stores, so I'll just get it online.
Popped couple bottles of excellent bubbly, watched some movies, looked at the distant fireworks across the bay for a bit with kitties. Very cool to be in sight lines to see the Oakland & SF ones together. Beautiful way to start the year!
