Ross Macdonald (yup, little - not big - D). Second one I've read. This one was pretty good! It's a simple, hard boiled detective story with very sparse, spare language. Not much description, it's up to you to think and infer. Very Chandler-like.
Zooming from L.A. to Sacramento, Archer stops to pick up a hitchhiker. The guy's been shot, and the intrepid detective gets drawn into a small-town drama involving alcohol smuggling and sordid family secrets.
